So now things were getting real! Booked in for the IUI. While I had done some research and knew that the Dr would be introducing the sperm into me via a catheter, it didn’t mean I wasn’t nervous. I was so grateful to have my bestie come in with me and hold my hand. It made all the difference in the nerves!
I also posted on the SMBC Facebook group that I was going in for the IUI. So many lovely comments from everyone wishing me luck. If you are going through something like this, these groups are fantastic.
But I wasn’t expecting it to work. So I was trying to be cautiously optimistic! Didn’t want to get my hopes up, only to be crushed.
Anyway, back to the day. Into the procedure room. Like a hospital room, but nothing too interesting. Bed with stirrups. But those ones you see on TV are a bit different to the ones in my room. They are more things to hang your legs over! Anyway, getting into a little too much info here, but I did warn you all.

So laying there and the procedure itself was about the same, if not less uncomfortable, as a pap-smear. I barely felt anything. Which my bestie, who was there with me, was quite surprised at. She was expecting a flinch or something from me, sitting there holding my shoulder, waiting. Apparently, and I’m glad I didn’t see this beforehand, the catheter was about 40 cm long! We also got a photo of the sperm. Such a small amount. Yes, gross, I know, but who cares!
So it was over and done within about 5 mins. Super easy. Then I was told to lay there for about 20 mins. We were just chatting and reading through the comments on the post. This is where the next amazing part of the journey comes in. One of the comments was from another woman who was also going in the same day. So upon further chat with her, it turned out she was not only in the same city as me but actually the next suburb over! Talk about a small world.
By the time I had gotten home, we were already fast friends, chatting away about what brought us to this stage, how we chose our donor’s, and just about everything else. I can’t believe how great it was to have someone going through the exact same thing simultaneously. This was also great in the upcoming 2-week wait, which is the time before we could go back in for a blood test to see if we were pregnant.
