I didn’t realise how scary it would be to announce something like this to family, friends and colleagues. But for some reason, it was.
Things might be different if I were married or in a relationship. But I was worried about what people would say, how they would react. I was pleasantly surprised.
I start with my Nan. Technically, she’s my Step-Nan, my Step / Adopted Dad’s mother, but she’s the only one I have left, and she’s pretty darn amazing. But I was concerned about her reaction, especially being from the older generation where you got married, had kids and stayed married. I was so nervous. But she was so excited and wanted to know all the details. She’s a modern old gal! And loves all things medical, so finding out all the information was cool for her. I was worried she would think it’s not something I should do alone etc. I’m so relieved she’s on board as she is the best Nan, so little man will love her.
Then I announced it on Facebook. So quite a few friends, family and acquaintances. Some knew I was single; others probably had no idea. I thought people would think I got knocked up from a one-night stand. I don’t know why I thought people would think that, but if a man isn’t in someone’s life and they get pregnant, sadly, it can be the go-to assumption.
But everyone was happy – so many lovely comments. I did get a “Happy for you both”, but no big deal there. Those who know me are so excited for me. That’s what counts.
Below is the little post I put up. I got out the Cricut and made the print on the onesie. Hard to see, but it says, “My siblings have paws”, and it has paws and cats on it.

Lastly was work. We still haven’t returned to campus, so no one has seen me. There are a few who know, of course. My boss and friend in my team both found out on the day. And I’d let my team know, but the rest of our department got to find out in an online meeting – lots of support there, which is excellent.
I also got a couple of calls from some of them after the meeting to chat, wish me luck and ask how I felt, as I did mention I was having some food aversions in the meeting (I might go through that in my next post!).
All in all, I was happy with the outcome.
